Chapter 31: Working with Web Parts 825
a “behind the scenes” Web Part that feeds data to other Web Parts via Web Part
connections. A similar concept exists with ASP.NET custom controls, where a
control can be present on a page but not be displayed.
■ Direction. Specifies the direction of the reading order of the text in the Web
Part: left to right, right to left, or default. When set to default, the text direction
is determined by the language settings.
■ Zone. Specifies the zone to which this Web Part belongs.
■ Part Order. Specifies the location of the Web Part within the zone. The value
for this property is an integer greater than zero. For example, a value of two
means that the Web Part is second from the top if the orientation of the Web
Parts within a zone is laid out top to bottom.
Because static Web Parts are not placed within zones, the Visible on Page,
Zone, and Part Order properties are ignored. Also, static Web Parts do not have the
ID property, which is set by the Web Part infrastructure when you include a dynamic
Web Part on your Web Part. This allows for the retrieval of the Web Part from the
content database.
Advanced Properties
The Advanced Properties section contains the following shared properties, and
therefore the Advanced Properties section is visible only in Shared View. These
properties can be customized if the zone in which the Web Part is placed allows
this.
■ Allow Minimize. Specifies whether a Web Part can be minimized by the
user at run time within the browser. If the check box next to this property is
not set (False), the Minimize option will not be available on the Web Part’s
drop-down menu and the Frame State property option buttons will be disabled
or not visible, depending on whether you are in Shared View or Personal View.
■ Allow Close. Specifies whether a Web Part can be closed—that is, removed
from the page and moved into the Web Part Page gallery by the user at run
time within the browser. When this property is set to False, the Close option
will not appear on the Web Part’s drop-down menu. Galleries will be discussed
later in this chapter.
■ Allow Zone Change. Specifies whether the Web Part can be moved to a different
zone by the user at run time within the browser. When this property is set
to False, you cannot drag the Web Part to another zone, but you are still able to
close the Web Part. When you add the Web Part back to the page from the Web
Part Page gallery, you can only place it in the zone from which it originated.
