Small Server Farm
Chapter 9: Capacity Planning 191
A small server farm is a step above a single server with SQL Server. In this scenario,
there are two servers in the farm—one runs the SharePoint Portal Server components,
and the other runs SQL Server 2000. Having SQL Server on a separate system
frees up some resources from the server running SharePoint Portal Server, allowing
it to support more users. Also, it is often used in organizations where there is an
existing SQL Server database or where administrative boundaries require certain
administrators to manage SQL Server systems and other administrators to manage
the intranet. Figure 9-1 depicts a small server farm topology infrastructure.
The reference configuration for a small server farm deployment used throughout the
chapter are given in the following paragraphs.
For a server running SharePoint Portal Server, the following configuration was
used:
■ 1 x 2.4-GHz Pentium-4 processor
■ 1-GB main memory expandable to 4 GB
■ Embedded ATA-100 IDE controller
■ 2 x 40-GB IDE ATA-100 disks
■ Embedded 10/100/1000-GB Ethernet interface card (NIC)
