Chapter 9: Capacity Planning 197
■ 28 x 72.8-GB Ultra3 SCSI disks (which supports up to 42 disks)
■ 1x embedded NC7770 10/100/1000-GB Ethernet NIC ports
■ Redundant power supply and fan
Windows SharePoint Services Server Farm (Optional)
For front-end Web servers (2 servers), the following configuration was used:
■ 2 x 2.8-GHz Xeon processors with 512-KB CacheServerWorks GC-LE chipset,
supporting a 400-MHz FSB
■ 2-GB main memory expandable to 6 GB
■ Embedded Wide Ultra3 Smart Array 5i RAID controller
■ 4 x 18.2-GB Ultra3 SCSI disks
■ Redundant power supply and fan
Maximum Large Server Farm with a SQL Cluster
Large server farms scale out well. The maximum large server farm with SQL cluster
is the largest single farm deployment you can have. You can scale a large farm to
any configuration between the minimum large server farm and the maximum larger
server farm, but because of space constraints, only the minimum and maximum configurations
are presented in this. For more information on large farm scaling, please
see Chapter 11.
The maximum supported large server farm with a SQL cluster consists of eighteen
servers: eight load-balanced front-end Web servers, four search servers, four
indexing management servers, and two systems running SQL servers acting as an
active/passive cluster. Additionally, a nineteenth server running the optional document
management components can be used. The maximum large server farm with
SQL cluster is a highly available SharePoint Portal Server solution supporting large
organizations with moderate to heavy usage. It provides protection from multiple
points of failure. If you need to scale out beyond the maximum large server farm
environment, you will need to use multiple farms and use inter-farm shared services
to connect the farms. Inter-farm shared services is described in Chapter 14, “Shared
Services.”
This type of farm environment was not tested for this chapter, so no specific
hardware recommendations are provided. If you are building a maximum large
server environment, you should contact your hardware vendor, Microsoft representative,
or both to discuss hardware recommendations.
