1100 Part XI: Upgrading and Migrating to SharePoint Products and Technologies
■ SharePoint Team Services is based on Microsoft FrontPage 2002 Server Extensions
and stores data in various locations on the file system, in the Windows
registry, and in either Microsoft SQL Server Data Engine (MSDE) or Microsoft
SQL Server databases. You can use tools such as a browser and FrontPage to
access and customize it. SharePoint Team Services and SharePoint Portal Server
2001 are seen as complementary products that share no common technology
other than that they can run on Microsoft Windows 2000 Server, which incorporates
Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS) 5.0. However, remember
that you cannot install both SharePoint Team Services and SharePoint Portal
Server 2001 on the same server.
■ Windows SharePoint Services is now an optional feature of the Microsoft Windows
Server 2003 operating system and once installed runs as a Windows
Server 2003 service. Windows SharePoint Services is based on a Web server
rendering technology known as Web Part Pages, which uses Microsoft .NET
Framework 1.1 and Microsoft ASP.NET, a customized version of FrontPage
extensions, and either Windows MSDE (WMSDE) or SQL databases. You can use
tools such as a browser, Web Folders, Microsoft Office applications, FrontPage
2003, and Microsoft Visual Studio .NET for access and customization purposes.
Websites based on Windows SharePoint Services allow users to share information,
collaborate with other users on documents, and create lists and Web Part
pages. You can also use Windows SharePoint Services as a development platform
to create collaboration applications and information-sharing applications.
■ Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003 is built on top of Windows
SharePoint Services; in fact, you cannot install SharePoint Portal Server 2003
without Windows SharePoint Services. A document management service is
now part of Windows SharePoint Services, although a backward-compatible
document library, based on the Web Storage System, can be installed with
SharePoint Portal Server 2003. Like the earlier products, all websites are hosted
on IIS; however, SharePoint Products and Technologies requires Windows
Server 2003, which incorporates IIS 6.0. SharePoint Products and Technologies
stores most of its data in the SQL server database, but for performance reasons,
some base templates are stored in the file system. Once these templates are
modified, they are stored in the SQL content database.
Note Microsoft SQL Server is a separately licensed product that is not
included with Windows SharePoint Services or SharePoint Portal Server 2003.
To migrate from an existing SharePoint Team Services installation or SharePoint
Portal Server 2001 installation to a new SharePoint Products and Technologies 2003
installation, you need to understand the updated features and how the changes in
