202 Part III: Planning and Deployment
■ Search scopes
■ Areas (topics)
■ News, events, and announcements
■ Document libraries
■ Keywords and Best Bets
Each of these is covered briefly later in this chapter and will be covered in full
detail in later chapters.
Knowing when to create a new portal site versus creating a new site collection
can be difficult. Here are some guidelines to help you make your decision:
■ Create new site collections when collaboration is your primary need and you
can use existing portal sites to meet your taxonomy needs.
■ Create new areas in existing portal sites if you need to present static information
and you don’t need to create a new taxonomy.
■ Create new portal sites if you need to implement a new taxonomy or present
such a volume of static information that one or a few areas in existing portal
sites will not be sufficient.
■ Create a new portal site with new associated site collections if you need to
implement the previous three bullet points in concert with each other.
Planning Roles, Groups, and Rights
Creating security groups in Active Directory instead of adding individual users
allows you to manage user rights just by adding or removing users from groups,
rather than assigning the same rights to many users individually. Based on your
business need, you can use default site groups, which provide rights based on the
type of actions each group can do. The default site groups include the following:
■ Reader. Has read-only access to the website
■ Contributor. Can add content to existing document libraries and lists
■ Web Designer. Can create lists and document libraries and customize pages
in the website
■ Administrator. Has full control of the website
■ Content Manager. Can create and manage areas, lists, libraries, and sites
■ Member. Can view and personalize portal site content and create sites
