1124 Part XI: Upgrading and Migrating to SharePoint Products and Technologies
When you move to the Web Part infrastructure, you only have to modify the
server control to inherit from the new Web Part base class.
Migrating SharePoint Portal Server 2001 Document Library Information
to Windows SharePoint Services
The backward-compatible document library option is compatible with SharePoint Portal
Server 2001 document approval and routing, and the support of multiple document
profiles for each document library folder. With the backward-compatible document
libraries, you can use a phased strategy to migrate to SharePoint Portal Server 2003;
that is, first install the backward-compatible document library option and then according
to your migration plan, move documents from the backward-compatible document
library to document libraries in the SQL Server content store. You should note
that the security settings on document libraries stored in the SQL Server content store
are different from the security options you have on backward-compatible document
libraries. You will need to take this into consideration, prior to migrating documents.
More Info See Chapter 6, “Security Architecture for SharePoint Products
and Technologies.”
To assist with this movement of documents, use the Microsoft Office SharePoint
Portal Server 2003 Document Library Migration Tools. These are a set of utility programs
developed by Microsoft for migrating documents and associated descriptive
information (metadata) from SharePoint Portal Server Web Storage System–based document
libraries—that is, from both SharePoint Portal Server 2001 document libraries as
well as SharePoint Portal Server 2003 backward-compatible document libraries to the
Microsoft SQL Server document libraries. The content exported by the tools can be
imported into SharePoint Portal Server 2003 SQL Server document libraries that reside
in a SharePoint Portal Server 2003 portal site, a team site, a My Site personal site, or a
SharePoint Portal Server 2003 portal area.
The two document library migration tools developed by Microsoft are Spout.exe
and Spin.exe. Spout.exe, the Document Library Export Tool, is a Microsoft Windows
program that reads Web Storage System–based document libraries and exports (or
outputs) the selected content as a collection of files in a format that is understood by
the import program. Spin.exe, the Document Library Import Tool, is a Windows
command-line program that reads the collection of files created by Spout.exe and
adds the documents and associated descriptive information to a selected portal area,
a portal site, a team site, or a personal website on the server running SharePoint Portal
Server 2003.
