For the purposes of this chapter, information components include any Microsoft
SharePoint component that contains information, such as documents, list items,
libraries, lists, areas, topics, and keywords. In the previous chapter, we used documents
and document libraries to store and find information. Document libraries are
just a list of documents along with the profile information you choose to associate
with them. In this chapter, we’ll expand on the ideas of a list and discuss how to
make information easy to find.
Lists, sites, and workspace sites are other locations where information can be
stored. Sites and workspace sites were discussed in Chapter 16, “Administering Windows
SharePoint Services.” Lists will be discussed in this chapter as will Topics,
areas, listings, keywords, keyword Best Bets, and document metadata. Lists, like
document libraries, hold information, whereas Topics, areas, listings, keywords,
keyword Best Bets, and document metadata help users find information.
