902 Part IX: Maintaining a Server in Windows SharePoint Services
Note that the search occurs on the name of the data source. The search process
simply looks for the presence of the search string within the data source name without
worrying about word boundaries.
Deleting Data Sources
Deleting a data source is as simple as right-clicking it and selecting Remove.
FrontPage 2003 creates a data source for each SharePoint list or document library in
your site. So, these data sources can be removed only by removing the SharePoint
list or document library.
Working with Data
Data Views
FrontPage 2003 makes working with data easier than ever by allowing you to modify
and present live data from a variety of data sources (as shown earlier in Table 32-4) to
create sophisticated data-driven websites that lower maintenance costs and allow
users to post data to your website by using only their browser.
Data-driven websites in FrontPage 2003 are enabled by the Windows Share-
Point Services Data Retrieval Service and support a complete set of WYSIWYG tools
for creating and modifying XSLT. They are industry-standard Web Parts for sorting,
grouping, filtering, and conditionally formatting data. You can use these Web Parts
to create high quality, dynamic Web pages for presenting live data.
You can also use a Windows SharePoint Services–based XML editor such as
Microsoft Office InfoPath to create XML forms that are saved to a form library. (For
more information, see Chapter 39, “Using Microsoft Office InfoPath with SharePoint
Products and Technologies.”) The XML data is not just stored to the form library,
but fields in the form data can be presented to site visitors as lists. These lists can
be sorted, filtered, and even connected to other Web Parts to extend the data even
further.
Data View Web Parts, also known as Data Views, are the primary component
used for data presentation when building data-driven websites using FrontPage
2003 and Windows SharePoint Services. Data Views never store static data.
Instead, Data Views always point back to the original data source for the data
found in the Data Source Catalog. The display is managed using the formalism of
an Extensible Stylesheet Language Transformation (XSLT), which is a powerful,
industry-standard language used for formatting the presentation of XML data. A
Data View retrieves data from the data source in the form of XML and applies the
XSLT to it. This gives the developer a powerful and standards-based way to display
formatted data.
XSLT is an XML-based language that enables you to transform one class of XML
document to another. XSLT offers great flexibility for presenting and exchanging
