Planning Search
This section describes the components of the SharePoint Portal Server search functionality.
It provides guidelines on planning a customized version of each search
component for your solution.
Overview of Search Functionality
There are four components that contribute to the SharePoint Portal Server search
functionality:
■ Content sources
■ Content indexes
■ Source groups
■ Search scopes
For an in-depth discussion of each of these components, please refer to Chapter
21, “The Architecture of the Gatherer,” and Chapter 22, “Managing External Content
in Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003.” This chapter will discuss the
planning requirements for content indexes only.
Planning Content Indexes
SharePoint Portal Server 2003 comes with two content indexes—Portal_Content and
Non_Portal_Content. You can create additional content indexes as well; however,
keep in mind that each search query has to be run on each index and the results
must be aggregated before they are returned to the user. The result is that the more
indexes you have, the longer search results take to generate.
Note Advanced search administration mode should be enabled so that
you can create and manage additional indexes. In addition, when you create
content sources, you can specify the index in which the content source will
appear, and you can specify the source group.
When planning content indexes, consider the following factors:
■ Number of documents. If the number of documents is very large, you
should consider breaking the content sources into many content sources with
smaller scopes to make the size of the indexes more manageable. This is
important because the index catalogs are copied across the network. Copying
