Chapter 3: Installing Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003 59
■ Microsoft Site Server (any version)
■ Office Server Extensions
■ Microsoft FrontPage Server Extensions (FPSE)
Uninstall the conflicting products before installing SharePoint Portal Server
2003. In some cases, you can make the conflicting products work together (such as
FPSE); see Technet for more detailed information.
Ensure the Account Performing the Installation Has Authority
When preparing for an installation of SharePoint Portal Server 2003, you must
ensure that the account with which you log on to the server has either local administrator
or Domain Admin privileges before continuing. In addition, the account that
you’ll specify for SQL Server during setup will also need to be a member of the
Power Users group (if installing on a Member Server) or the Built-In Administrators
group (if installing on a Domain Controller).
Third-Party Database Interoperability
Microsoft SQL Server 2000 is the only database product that SharePoint Portal Server
can use to store the SharePoint Portal Server configuration and content databases;
however, it can connect to almost any third-party database products to store Web
Part information.
Using the Database Engine Option on a Domain Controller
The Microsoft SQL Server Database Engine (MSDE) option is not available when
installing SharePoint Portal Server on a domain controller. If you are to install Share-
Point Portal Server on a domain controller, you must either first install SQL Server
2000 Service Pack 3 on the domain controller itself or use a remote server running
SQL Server 2000. If you require MSDE as the database repository, configure the
server running Windows Server 2003 as a member server of a domain.
More Info Best practices are to not run applications such as SharePoint
Portal Server 2003 on domain controllers. Following best practices in this
regard prevents performance issues that can result from processes competing
for resources and provides more in-depth security.
