The minimum large server farm with a SQL cluster is the step above a highly available<br />

medium server farm. A minimum large server farm does not actually need a<br />

SQL cluster to be supported, but in practice, almost every large server farm will have<br />

a SQL cluster for high availability. This scenario has seven servers: two load-balanced<br />

front-end Web servers, two dedicated search servers, one dedicated indexing<br />

server, <strong>and</strong> two systems running SQL servers acting as an active/passive cluster. A<br />

minimum large server farm is mainly used by large organizations or medium-sized<br />

organizations with heavy portal site usage. The minimum large server farm configuration<br />

is really useful over the high availability medium server farm when there is a<br />

lot of searching in the portal site. Figure 9-4 depicts a minimum large server farm<br />

with a SQL cluster topology infrastructure.<br />

The reference configurations for front-end <strong>and</strong> search servers in the minimum large<br />

server farm with SQL Cluster are:<br />

For dedicated front-end Web servers (2 servers), the following configuration<br />

was used:<br />

■ 2 x 2.8-GHz Xeon processors with 512-KB CacheServerWorks GC-LE chipset,<br />

supporting a 400-MHz FSB<br />

■ 2-GB main memory exp<strong>and</strong>able to 6 GB<br />

SQL Cluster<br />

■ Embedded Wide Ultra3 Smart Array 5i RAID controller
