26 Part I: Introduction to SharePoint Products and Technologies
More Info For information about running Windows SharePoint Services
using Kerberos authentication, refer to Microsoft Knowledge Base Article
832769 at http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=832769.
When an IIS virtual server is extended with Windows SharePoint Services, the
virtual server is configured to use Integrated Windows authentication (formerly
named NTLM, or Microsoft Windows NT Challenge/Response authentication). By
configuring Integrated Windows authentication on the virtual server, the Windows
SharePoint Services virtual server can run as a domain account, and you do not have
to configure a service principal name (SPN) in Active Directory directory services
(which benefits you by reducing administrative overhead).
This type of authentication prevents appropriate authentication for OWA in
environments where front-end servers run Exchange 2003 and separate back-end
servers run Exchange 2003, Windows Server 2003, and Windows SharePoint Services.
Note Windows Small Business Server 2003 is not affected by this problem
because it is by default a single-server setup with OWA and the
Exchange 2003 information store on the same server.
If your environment requires Kerberos authentication, follow these two steps
to configure Kerberos authentication on the virtual server:
1. Enable Kerberos in the IIS Metabase.
2. Configure a Service Principal Name for the Domain User Account.
Using Windows SharePoint Services and Project Server 2003 on the
Same Server
Although Project Server 2003 can be installed on either Windows 2000 (Service Pack
3 or later) or Windows Server 2003, the product was designed specifically to work
with Windows SharePoint Services, which can run only on Windows Server 2003.
Windows SharePoint Services provides collaboration options such as sharing documents
for Project Server. When you install both solutions on the same server, you
should install Windows SharePoint Services first, and then install Project Server 2003.
This installation order helps to simplify the configuration of your site.
