Chapter 9: Capacity Planning 201
divisional portal sites. A corporate portal site is required for a SharePoint Portal
Server deployment.
When planning the corporate portal site, the following aspects need to be
considered:
■ Shared services, including search, user profiles, audiences, and alerts
■ Personal sites
■ Site groups/roles, permissions/rights
■ Areas (topics)
■ News, events, and announcements
■ Keywords and Best Bets
■ SharePoint sites
Each of these is covered briefly later in this chapter and will be covered in full
detail in later chapters.
Planning Additional Portals
Additional portal site content is focused on the employees involved with a specific
topic, usually a division or project. For example, employees in a human resources
(HR) department will access their divisional portal site to find out about news,
events, announcements, and documents related to HR. In organizations with many
large ongoing projects, additional portal sites can be provisioned for these projects
rather than for divisions. For example, a company that manufacturers airplanes can
have a portal site for each different type of plane it manufacturers in addition to or
instead of divisional portal sites. Typically, employees will access their divisional or
project portal site more often than the corporate portal site. This arrangement saves
time and keeps each employee more focused on the type of information they need
instead of requiring them to search it out on the corporate portal site. In that scenario,
each divisional or project portal site should share the search services of the
corporate portal site, allowing users to search the enterprise from their divisional
portal site.
Determining whether to use Shared Services is also important when planning
divisional portal sites. Not using shared services can have a significant impact on
farm resources, especially memory.
When planning a divisional or project portal site, consider the following areas:
■ Team sites
■ Associated divisional team sites to divisional portal sites
■ Site groups/roles, permissions/rights
