532 Part VII: Information Management in SharePoint Products and Technologies
By default the Request Access feature is enabled at the website level and on document
libraries. There is no such equivalent feature for portal document libraries.
To enable Request Access at the document level
1. Navigate to the document library, and then in the left pane, click Modify settings
and columns.
2. On the Customize Document Library page, in the General Settings section,
click Change permissions for this document library.
3. In the Action pane, click Manage Request Access.
4. On the Manage Request Access: Document Library page, clear or select the
check box for Allow Requests for Access.
5. Click OK.
This method of enabling Request Access doesn’t permit you to change the
recipient of e-mail—that is, you cannot specify a different e-mail recipient for each
document library or list. To change the Request For Access e-mail address, you need
to edit Allow Request Access at the site level, as illustrated in Figure 19-8. If Request
For Access is disallowed at the site level, the Allow Requests For Access at the document
library is unavailable.
Warning Even with the Allow Request For Access feature enabled, under
certain circumstances users will be redirected to the Access Denied Web
page—for example, if a user has only reader rights on the portal and she
then clicks on a website Add To My Links. The reason for this particular
access denied message is that the My Links feature is part of a user’s personal
website. To have a personal website, the user must be at least
assigned Member rights on the portal site. Occasionally, when using Share-
Point Products and Technologies, the Access Denied message or the Windows
Security dialog box will appear. These are obtuse methods of stating
that the user is trying to attempt an activity for which she currently doesn’t
have permission. Such messages can also occur because of browser and
proxy server configuration settings. In most cases, the message isn’t generated
because of a misconfiguration or a bug within SharePoint Products and
Technologies. End users and support staff should be warned of the possibilities
of and reasons for the Access Denied and Windows Security dialog box
appearing so that access permission problems can be resolved efficiently.
