86 Part I: Introduction to SharePoint Products and Technologies
Installing SharePoint Portal Server into a Non–Active
Directory Environment
Active Directory is not required for Windows SharePoint Services or SharePoint Portal
Server 2003. However, without Active Directory, you cannot prepopulate and
synchronize the SharePoint Portal Server profile database with the list of users from
Active Directory, and users’ personal sites are not registered for cross-farm synchronization
in a multiserver configuration.
SharePoint Portal Server is supported only on servers that are members of a
Microsoft Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, or Windows Server 2003 domain. Installing
and operating a SharePoint Portal Server computer is supported if your server is
a member of a domain or a member of a workgroup. (Domain installations are more
easily administered, however.) All servers in a server farm must be members of the
same domain.
For best results, deploy SharePoint Products and Technologies in an Active
Directory environment.
Uninstalling SharePoint Portal Server 2003
SharePoint Portal Server 2003 can be uninstalled by using Add/Remove Programs.
Removing SharePoint Portal Server does not remove the following items from your
server:
■ Windows SharePoint Services
■ Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine (if installed)
■ Microsoft SQL Server (if installed locally)
■ Component for backward-compatible document libraries.
Microsoft recommends you remove the applications in this order:
1. SharePoint Portal Server
2. Windows SharePoint Services
3. SQL Server Desktop Engine (if installed)
4. SQL Server (if installed locally)
Warning Most files and subfolders located in installation folders will be
removed. All Microsoft SQL Server databases will be detached, but not
removed, from the database server. When you remove SharePoint Portal
Server, all user data is left in the database files. These files are also left
behind if you remove SQL Server Desktop Engine or Microsoft SQL Server.

Hooray! Your file is uploaded and ready to be published.
