754 Part IX: Maintaining a Server in Windows SharePoint Services
You can use the SharePoint Migration Tool from the command line or from
batch files. To back up a site, you use the SharePoint Migration Tool with the following
parameters:
smigrate.exe -w -f [-e -y -u -pw
]
All backup files end with the .fwp extension. If you do not specify the .fwp
extension, it will be added automatically. The optional –e paramater excludes subsites
during backup. The optional –y parameter overwrites an existing backup file.
The optional –u parameter specifies the user name of the website administrator. The
optional –pw parameter specifies the password for the website administrator. Use an
asterisk (*) to be prompted to type a password.
Note You can also use Microsoft FrontPage 2003 to create a backup file
by opening a site via File\Open Site, specifying the URL of the site, and
choosing Tools\Server\Backup Web Site. You can restore a site via
FrontPage 2003. First you should open the nontemplated site to which you
want to restore the backup. You can do this by choosing File\Open Site,
specifying the URL of the site, and then choosing Tools\Server\Restore
Web site.
During a backup, the SharePoint Migration Tool produces a cabinet file (.cab)
with an .fwp extension to back up the site and then uses this .fwp file to restore the
site or site collection. Developers can modify the backed-up site template before the
site is restored by changing the file extension of the .fwp file to .cab and extracting
the manifest.xml file. After changes are made to the manifest.xml file, the .fwp file can
be repackaged and the site can be restored by using the SharePoint Migration Tool.
You can only use the SharePoint Migration Tool or FrontPage to restore a backup
to a site if the site exists but no template has been applied to the site yet. You can create
a nontemplated site in the following ways:
■ Using the Windows SharePoint Services pages, you can create a new site on
the New SharePoint Site page. After creating the site, you should stop the creation
process on the Template Selection page before choosing and applying a
template.
■ Using the Stsadm.exe tool, use the CreateWeb operation without using the
–sitetemplate parameter—for example: stsadm.exe –o createweb –url http:
//woodgrove/MySubSite
■ Using FrontPage, select File\New\Subsite, and then select any template except
for SharePoint Team Site. This will apply a FrontPage site template to the site;

Hooray! Your file is uploaded and ready to be published.
