722 Part VIII: Securing SharePoint Products and Technologies
Summary
SharePoint Portal Server 2003 provides single sign-on functionality implemented by
Microsoft Single Sign-On service. The SSOSrv service provides storage and mapping of
credentials such as account names and passwords so that portal site–based applications
can retrieve information from third-party enterprise applications such as ERP and
CRM systems. The credentials are encrypted and stored in the SQL Server database.
For each enterprise application, you need to configure the corresponding single signon
application definition. SharePoint Portal Server 2003 provides a programming interface
to use the single sign-on feature. After you have configured the application definition,
you need to create a Web Part that programmatically implements the single
sign-on functionality using classes provided by SharePoint Portal Server, and then
retrieves the data from the corresponding back-end application. There are numerous
uses for single sign-on functionality in the enterprise environment.
