514 Part VII: Information Management in SharePoint Products and Technologies
Although pictures can be stored in other types of lists and libraries, there are
many advantages to using picture libraries. These advantages include viewing pictures
with one of three unique display styles (detailed list, thumbnails, or a filmstrip);
sharing pictures by using slide shows or by sending pictures directly to
compatible programs; downloading pictures directly to a computer; and editing pictures
with Windows SharePoint Services–compatible image editors, such as
Microsoft Office Picture Manager. If you don’t have Microsoft Office Picture Manager
installed on the computer that you are using to locate a picture library or your Web
browser is not configured to support ActiveX controls, you’ll receive an error if you
try to edit a picture held in a picture library, as illustrated in Figure 19-1.
website
Tip The Thumbnail style is best for browsing through a large set of pictures.
Thumbnail images of the following extensions can be created: .gif,
.jpeg, .jpg, .jpe, .jfif, .xbm, .bmp, .dib, .png, .wmf, .emf, .tif, and .tiff.
The Filmstrip style displays a strip of smaller pictures and a larger picture
of the selected picture. This allows you to review many pictures and at
the same time view in detail one of the pictures. Use the Selected Pictures
view if you need to filter the items listed in My Pictures. The default display
style for this view is Thumbnail.
As you can with other document libraries, you can add, create, delete, and edit
items listed, as well as subscribe to e-mail notifications. If a Windows SharePoint
Services–compatible program (such as a Microsoft Office 2003 program) is installed,
you can upload multiple files.

Hooray! Your file is uploaded and ready to be published.

Saved successfully!
