36 Part I: Introduction to SharePoint Products and Technologies
Backing Up Your WMSDE Server
Before you perform any upgrade, you should first back up your server. In the case
of an upgrade from WMSDE to SQL Server on the same machine, the backup serves
as insurance in case anything goes awry. If you are migrating to a remote SQL
Server, the backup can be used to restore the Windows SharePoint Services 2.0 data
to your remote SQL Server machine.
To back up your Windows SharePoint Services sites using the Stsadm.exe tool,
follow these steps:
1. Use Stsadm.exe to list all the sites currently running on your server by typing
stsadm.exe -o enumsites -url YourURL at a command line (where YourURL
is the path to your Windows SharePoint Services virtual server that lists your
site collections).
2. Once you’ve chosen the site you want to back up, type stsadm.exe -o backup
-url http://server_name/site -filename backup.dat where backup is the
name of the backup file you’re creating.
Note These steps do not back up the entire SQL Server database; rather,
they back up the Windows SharePoint Services sites contained within the
database. To actually back up the SQL Server database, the user must use
Enterprise Manager, or osql.exe.
Upgrading WMSDE to SQL Server on the Same Server
If your SQL Server is installed on the same computer as Windows SharePoint Services
2.0, follow these steps:
1. Insert or connect to the SQL Server 2000 installation CD, clicking Autorun.exe
if the installation splash screen does not appear. Click the SQL Server 2000
Components link.
2. Click the Install Database Server link, and then click Next.
3. Select Local Computer in the Computer Name box, and then click Next.
4. On the Installation Selection page, select Upgrade, Remove, Or Add Components
To An Existing Instance Of SQL Server, and then click Next.
5. On the Instance Name page, clear the Default check box, select SharePoint
from the Instance Name drop-down list, and then click Next.
6. On the Existing Installation page, the Upgrade option should be selected by
default. If it is not, select it. Click Next.

Hooray! Your file is uploaded and ready to be published.
