If you have been using Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server 2001 and/or SharePoint
Team Services from Microsoft, you probably have several portal sites you need to
upgrade to Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003 and websites that you
need to move to new servers running Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services. This
chapter details the approaches you might take and the tools you can use. It will also
introduce the basic concepts of the technologies involved in these four products,
which will allow you to formulate the extent of the task you are undertaking during
the upgrade or migration process. The architecture between these sets of products
has changed considerably; briefly, the previous versions of SharePoint Products and
Technologies differ from the newer versions as follows:
■ SharePoint Portal Server 2001 is based on Web Parts using Microsoft Digital
Dashboard technology and stores data in the Microsoft Web Storage System
(the same storage technology used by Microsoft Exchange Server). You can use
tools such as a browser, My Network Places, Microsoft Office applications, and
the Microsoft Office XP Development (MOD) Environment to access and customize
it. You cannot install SharePoint Portal Server 2001 on a server farm.
