Chapter 11: Deploying a Single Server and a Small Server Farm 277
make database administration easier. To manage WMSDE databases, you will have
to use the osql command-line tool. Database administration is outside the scope of
this book. More information on database administrative tasks, the SQL Server Enterprise
Manager, and the osql utility can be found in SQL Server Books Online, the
January 2004 update of which can be found at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads /
Migrating from WMSDE to SQL Server 2000
Small Farm
After you have used Windows SharePoint Services or SharePoint Portal Server 2003
with WMSDE for some time, you might run into performance or storage problems
and need to move to a more scaled-out solution. If you find yourself in this situation,
you can switch to using Microsoft SQL Server 2000 as your database instead of
WMSDE.
You can upgrade WMSDE in-place to SQL Server, although it is not recommended.
The Windows SharePoint Services instructions to upgrade are inherently
difficult. Instead, you should back up your data, reinstall the operating system,
install SQL, and then install SharePoint Portal Server 2003 and restore your data. This
scenario has been tested and has proved to be much easier than upgrading.
If you are moving to a larger environment, with one or many front-end Web
servers and one or many back-end database servers, the process is more complicated.
For more information on migrating WMSDE to SQL Server on the same server
or to a separate server, see the “Migrating from WMSDE to a Remote SQL Server or
Server Farm” section in Chapter 2 and the “Migrating from WMSDE to SQL Server”
section in Chapter 3.
A small server farm has the following two servers:
■ One front-end Web server, running SharePoint Products and Technologies.
This server could have installed Windows SharePoint Portal Services or Share-
Point Portal Server 2003 running the Web component, index, search, and job
services. This server can optionally run the components for backward compatibility
with SharePoint Portal Server 2001 document libraries, or this can be
installed on a separate server.
■ One server running SQL Server 2000 with Service Pack 3a or higher. You cannot
use WMSDE in a small server farm configuration, as WMSDE cannot be connected
to remotely. You can use WMSDE only in a single-server configuration.
