FrontPage 2003 Features to Understand when Editing
a SharePoint Portal Server 2003 Site
With some features in FrontPage 2003, you can experience unanticipated results
when editing portal sites created with SharePoint Portal Server 2003, so it is recommended
that you understand these features.
Optimize HTML
FrontPage 2003 Optimize HTML is a tool that allows you to clean up HTML code by
removing comments, white space, unused content, and HTML generated from Word
HTML and other tools. Using Optimize HTML on pages in a portal site created with
SharePoint Portal Server 2003 will not harm the pages; however, FrontPage 2003
might have difficulty displaying some pages after Optimize HTML has been used on
them. Instead, optimize your HTML by hand.
Tip The command affected is Optimize HTML (on the Tools menu).
Dynamic Web Templates (DWT)
FrontPage 2003 allows you to create dynamic page templates that define regions that
are editable by users. These templates are called Dynamic Web Templates (DWT),
and they stay attached to pages even after they are created to make updating many
pages at one time fast and easy. Most commonly, DWTs use Themes or attach to an
external style sheet to define formatting for the pages attached to them. Because
SharePoint Portal Server 2003 sites include links to style sheets used across the portal
site, applying a DWT to a portal site very likely would replace the links to the Share-
Point Portal Server 2003 style sheet, which could cause formatting problems on the
pages attached to the DWT. DWTs can be used without problems on new pages in
a portal site. However, because Themes and style sheets are commonly used in conjunction
with DWTs, you should fully understand the effect of DWTs on portal sites
created with SharePoint Portal Server 2003.
Tip The command affected is Dynamic Web Template (on the Format menu).
