Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services and Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server
2003 share the same underlying technologies. This is a change from the first version
of SharePoint Portal Server. Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server 2001 did not share
underlying technology with SharePoint Team Services from Microsoft. In this version
of Microsoft SharePoint Products and Technologies, SharePoint Portal Server, as the
server product, works with and builds upon the architecture of Windows SharePoint
Services. This chapter does not cover the feature differences between SharePoint Portal
Server and Windows SharePoint Services. Instead, it focuses on the architectural
differences that are found in SharePoint Portal Server and explains the architecture of
services that are particular to SharePoint Portal Server.
Note When referring to both products as a single unit, we’ll use the term
SharePoint Products and Technologies.
