Chapter 2: Installing Windows SharePoint Services 35
Note Although you can choose the Use An Existing Application Pool, you
improve your security and stability by running each virtual server in its own
application pool. Virtual servers could share application pools in cases
where several virtual servers relate to similar functions, or if there will be so
many different application pools that performance will be degraded.
5. In the List owner section, type the user name for your site owner in the
Account Name box (using the DomainName\UserName convention), and
type the e-mail address for that account in the E-Mail Address box.
6. In the Database Information section, you will either select an existing content
database or create a new one. If you create a new database, be sure to use
a new database name to avoid overwriting existing content.
7. Specify a URL in the Custom URL Path box if you want to do so.
8. In the Quota Settings section, select a template in the Select A Quota Template
box. (If you are not using quotas, there is of course no need to set this
property.)
9. Select the language you will use from the Site Languages section.
10. Click OK to commit the changes. Once the virtual server extension completes,
the browser will display a confirmation page. Click OK to return to the Virtual
Server Settings page; otherwise, to view your extended site, click the link on
the Virtual Server Successfully Extended page, and then choose a template for
your site.
You now have installed Windows SharePoint Services with SQL Server located
on the same machine. To learn more about configuring Windows SharePoint Services,
refer to Chapter 16, “Administering Windows SharePoint Services.”
The process for installing Windows SharePoint Services with a remote SQL
Server is the same as installing a SQL Server on the same machine as described earlier,
but you will specify the name of the remote SQL Server in the configuration
options.
Upgrading from WMSDE to SQL Server
If you find that your WMSDE installation no longer can meet the number of websites
you host, you can either upgrade or migrate WMSDE to use the more scalable and
robust SQL Server product. If you want to maintain the SQL Server on the same
server as Windows SharePoint Services 2.0, you can upgrade the WMSDE database
itself to SQL Server. If you need to run SQL Server on another computer, you will
need to migrate your data. Both scenarios are outlined in the following sections.
