by the data source (for example, Microsoft SQL Server) and that it is configured
to accept Windows sign-on credentials. If your SQL Server is on a
physical machine other than the Windows SharePoint Services machine,
you will need to use one of the other authentication types.
■ Use Single Sign-On authentication (requires SharePoint Portal
Server). This option can be used when this site is part of a portal site
created by using SharePoint Portal Server 2003 and the administrator has
enabled and configured Single Sign-On.
■ Use Custom connection string. This option lets you specify an OLEDB
connection string used to connect to the database. This option can be
used for fine-grained control of the connection.
In this example, we use the Use Windows Authentication option. This assumes
that the SQL Server and Windows SharePoint Services exist on the same machine. If
connecting to an external database is required (common), you must use another
authentication type because Windows Authentication allows only “one hop” of the
credentials. So, you cannot authenticate against an external SQL server using the
Windows credentials captured by the Windows SharePoint Services server.
To use the Use Windows Authentication option to create
a new database connection
2. Select the table, view, or stored procedure that you want to use as the source of
data for this connection. Note that stored procedures will be available only if the
Enable Update Query Support setting has been turned on in the Data Retrieval
Services settings on the Windows SharePoint Services server. In this example, we
choose the Northwind database in the drop-down list of databases.
