Chapter 2: Installing Windows SharePoint Services 25
Application Coresidency and Configuration Considerations
Interactions between Windows SharePoint Services and other technologies can
result in problems. This section outlines some of the issues and workarounds available
to operate Windows SharePoint Services most effectively in your environment.
For more information about problems, be sure to check http://support.microsoft.com
for the latest Microsoft Knowledge Base articles. See Table 2-3 for an overview of the
applications with which Windows SharePoint Services has issues.
Table 2-3 Windows SharePoint Services Application Compatibility
Application Limitation
Existing Web applications Installation disables existing Web applications and
extends the default website unless another virtual
server is specified.
Exchange 2003 If Exchange is installed in a front-end/back-end configuration,
Microsoft Outlook Web Access (OWA)
requests might be incorrectly handled and fail.
Microsoft Office XP or Office 2000 Cannot use multiple upload features or other features
that depend on the new features in Office 2003.
Microsoft FrontPage You can use FrontPage 2003 to modify Windows
SharePoint Services sites; earlier versions of
FrontPage are not compatible.
FrontPage Server Extensions (FPSE) If the default website’s virtual server is extended with
FPSE 2002, Windows SharePoint Services will not
automatically extend or upgrade it when installed
using the Typical Installation option.
Microsoft Class Server Class server can use only the default virtual server, so
Windows SharePoint Services must be installed to a
different virtual server.
Installing Windows SharePoint Services with Existing Web
Applications
Windows SharePoint Services should not be installed on a server that is already running
another Web application. Any preexisting Web applications on the server will
be disabled during installation. For information about running Windows SharePoint
Services with another Web application, refer to Microsoft Knowledge Base Article
823265 at http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=823265.
Exchange 2003 and Windows SharePoint Services
When Windows SharePoint Services is installed on a computer that is running
Microsoft Exchange Server, the deployment causes Kerberos authentication to be
disabled in Internet Information Services and can result in incorrect handling of
OWA requests to an Exchange Server.
