206 Part III: Planning and Deployment
Note SharePoint Portal Server does not allow spaces in content index
names. Spaces are supported in source group names. Also, note that
Non_Portal_Content and Portal_Content exist by default.
Updating Content Indexes
The four methods for updating content indexes are as follows:
■ Full
■ Incremental
■ Incremental (inclusive)
■ Adaptive
Planning Alerts
The method used to update the index can have a significant effect on performance.
These update methods are discussed in Chapter 21.
Propagating Content Indexes
Propagation happens automatically at the end of every successful update (or crawl).
The following should be taken into consideration when planning content indexes:
■ The destination search server must be on a trusted domain.
■ For every index to be propagated, there must be twice the size of the index in
free space on the destination search server.
Note Team sites under a SharePoint Portal Server portal site are crawled
normally; however, these sites can be searched only from the portal site
itself, not at the team-site level. To search from a team site, SQL Full Text
indexing must be enabled. For information on how to enable SQL Full Text
indexing, please refer to the SQL Server documentation.
Alerts provide notification when information of interest is added or updated on the
portal site and associated content sources. You can define areas of interest and identify
how and when you want to be notified. You can add an alert to track new
matches to a search query, changes to content in an area, or a new site added to the
Site Directory.
