Deploying a Single Server with MSDE
A single-server deployment with MSDE is the smallest and least scalable option for
a SharePoint Portal Server solution because it is limited to five concurrent jobs and
has a 2-GB storage limitation. This deployment type is recommended for testing and
development as well as for small organizations that anticipate light usage of their
corporate intranet. This is the least costly deployment option.
Hardware Recommendations
The reference configuration for a single server with MSDE deployment used
throughout the chapter is:
■ 1 x 2.4-gigahertz (GHz) Pentium-4 processor
■ 1-GB main memory expandable to 4 GB
■ Embedded ATA-100 IDE controller
■ 2 x 40-GB IDE ATA-100 disks
■ Embedded 10/100/1000-GB Ethernet interface card (NIC)
Deploying a Single Server Using SQL
A single-server deployment with SQL Server is a step above a single server with
MSDE. Running SQL Server 2000 rather than MSDE provides additional scalability
because MSDE can support only five concurrent jobs and a 2-GB database limit,
while SQL Server does not have this restriction. This deployment type is recommended
for small organizations with moderate usage of their corporate intranet or
organizations and medium-sized organizations (less than 10,000 employees) with
light usage of the corporate intranet.

■ 1 x 2.4-GHz Pentium-4 processor
■ 1-GB main memory expandable to 4 GB
