Chapter 10: Performance Monitoring in Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003 247
Usage analysis processing is disabled by default.
To enable usage analysis processing for all virtual servers in the server farm,
follow these steps:
1. Click Site Settings.
2. Click Go to Central Administration.
3. Under Component Configuration, click Configure usage analysis processing.
4. Select Enable logging.
5. Specify a location for the usage analysis log files. The default location is
\systemroot\system32\logfiles\STS. Within this directory, Usage Analysis Processing
creates a folder for every virtual server, named according to the IIS virtual
server instance number. Within each virtual server folder, Usage Analysis
Processing creates a folder for each day.
6. Enter the number of log files to create, from 1 to 30. It is recommended that
you set this number to be equal to the number of virtual servers on the frontend
Web servers in the server farm. Splitting usage data into many smaller files
rather than placing it into one big file reduces the amount of memory required
to process all the usage data log entries.
7. Creating and updating the logs is processor intensive, so set processing to take
place when site usage is low—for example, between 1:00 A.M. and 4:00 A.M.
Note Give the STS_WPG group read, write, and update permissions to the
directory. Without these permissions, IIS cannot create or update the logs.
Usage Analysis Processing Reports
Even though the data is logged and stored for an entire site collection, when you
view the data in HTML Administration pages, you can see the usage analysis data for
a particular Windows SharePoint Services site or subsite but not for the entire site
collection. A summary of the entire site collection usage is available from the toplevel
website for each site collection. Although you can see the total number of hits
for an entire site collection, to see detailed information you must use the Site Usage
Report page for the individual site or subsite.
Site usage reports are useful for identifying which content on your Windows
SharePoint Services sites is being heavily used or used very little. This helps you to
understand which sites are candidates for archiving and which sites should be kept
online. In addition, the site collection usage reports help you track how much storage
space your sites are using. This information is gathered as part of the quota
tracking for Windows SharePoint Services sites.
For more information about viewing and analyzing usage analysis data, see “Analyzing
Web Site Usage” in the online SharePoint Portal Server 2003 Administrator’s Guide.
