756 Part IX: Maintaining a Server in Windows SharePoint Services
The SharePoint Portal Server Data Backup and Restore utility creates an XMLbased
manifest file that lists all the individual backup files for SharePoint Portal
Server and Windows SharePoint Services databases. To use the SharePoint Portal
Server Data Backup and Restore utility successfully, the following accounts must
have access to the directory containing the backup files:
■ The account for the Microsoft Windows NT service corresponding to the SQL
Server instance must have write access to the directory if you want to create a
backup; the account needs read access if you want to restore a backup.
■ The search service and the account that the Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server
Search service runs under must have write access to the directory.
■ The current user must have write access to the directory.
The current user must also have the following rights:
■ The user is a member of the Local Administrators group on the (optional) backward-compatible
document library server.
■ The user is a member of the Backup Operators group on the content index
servers.
■ The user is a member of the SQL Server 2000 System Administrator’s role if
you want to restore a backup. For a backup, it is required that the user account
has write access to the configuration database and backup permission on the
particular databases that are being backed up.
Note After making a backup, you must click the Reset button before performing
any other actions.
You can run the SharePoint Portal Server 2003 Data Backup and Restore utility
from the Start menu or by typing Spsbackup from the command line in the \bin
directory of the server running SharePoint Portal Server. This tool provides a graphic
user interface that is easy to use, as shown in Figure 28-1.
You can also run the SharePoint Portal Server 2003 Data Backup and Restore utility
by using the Spsbackup.exe command-line utility, which enables you to write a script
that backs up the SharePoint Portal Server databases on a schedule. Run Spsbackup.exe
with the following command-line parameters:
spsbackup { /all | /teamdbs | /ssodb | /doclib |
{ /portal site portal siteUrl [ /service { sitedbs | index } ] } } /file
backupfilepath\fileprefix [/overwrite]

Hooray! Your file is uploaded and ready to be published.
