Managing and Customizing Search
Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services enables users to search all website content
on a particular virtual server. Because all site information (including documents) is
stored in a database, the search model will allow searching of all site content.
The type of search you use for Windows SharePoint Services depends on the
other software you are running in your server system, as outlined here:
■ If you have Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server “v2.0” installed, you can use the
search features included with SharePoint Portal Server “v2.0” to search your
websites from a portal site.
■ If you are running Microsoft SQL Server 2000, Windows SharePoint Services
uses the SQL Server 2000 full-text searching features to search for website
content.
Search features are available only for Windows SharePoint Services with SQL
Server 2000 or with SharePoint Portal Server “v2.0”. If you are running Microsoft SQL
Server Desktop Engine 2000 (MSDE) for your database and do not have SharePoint
Portal Server “v2.0” , no search features are available. If you want search, you must
either upgrade to SQL Server 2000 or use SharePoint Portal Server “v2.0” to search
your website.
Search is available per virtual server. This means that search is either turned on or off
for all top-level websites and subsites on a particular virtual server. Subsites inherit
the search settings from parent sites. If search has not been enabled for a virtual
server, the search links will not appear in the websites that reside on that virtual
server.
Search can query most lists and all document libraries on your site. Search cannot
query lists of lists (such as the Quick Launch bar) or surveys. Users can search
the entire site or a single list page within the site (for example, for a particular contact
in the Contacts list).
