SharePoint Products and Technologies Licensing
Guidelines
The following licenses are required for an internal Windows SharePoint Services
deployment:
■ Windows Server 2003 CALs for all employees or employee devices that access
the server.
■ Windows Server 2003 Server licenses for each server providing SharePoint Services
functionality.
■ Optional: SQL Server 2000 CAL and Server licenses or SQL 2000 processor
licenses. (See the “SQL Server Licensing Guidelines” section that follows.)
The following licenses are required for an external Windows SharePoint Services
deployment (extranet, Internet, or both):
■ Windows Server 2003 CALs for all employees or employee devices that access
the server.
■ Windows Server 2003 Server licenses for each server providing Windows
SharePoint Services functionality.
■ Windows Server 2003 External Connector License for each server that provides
Windows SharePoint Services functionality to partners, customers, or both.
■ Optional: SQL Server 2000 processor licenses. SQL Server must be licensed per
processor for external use. (See the “SQL Server Licensing Guidelines” section
that follows.)
The following licenses are required for an internal SharePoint Portal Server
2003 deployment (intranet only):
■ Windows Server 2003 CALs for all employees or employee devices.
■ Windows Server 2003 Server licenses for each server providing either Share-
Point Portal Server or Windows SharePoint Services functionality.
■ SharePoint Portal Server 2003 CALs for all employees or employee devices.
■ SharePoint Portal Server 2003 Server licenses for each server providing Share-
Point Portal Server functionality.
■ Optional: SQL Server 2000 CAL and Server licenses or SQL 2000 processor
licenses. (See the “SQL Server Licensing Guidelines” section that follows.)
The following licenses are required for an external SharePoint Portal Server
2003 deployment (extranet, Internet, or both):
