462 Part VI: Administration of Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003
Proxy Server Settings
With this link, you can set SharePoint Portal Server 2003 index servers to use a proxy
server when they create crawls of external websites so that they can create full-text
indexes of those sites. Proxy servers are generally used to enhance the security of
intranets by working along with a firewall to prevent unauthorized access in from or
out to the Internet. Proxy servers can also enhance performance by caching recently
accessed Web pages, which minimizes download time.
By default, SharePoint Portal Server uses the proxy server setting defined for
the default content access account. The default content access account derives its
proxy server setting from the current proxy server settings in the Microsoft Internet
Explorer application on the crawling server.
Changes to the proxy settings for the SharePoint Portal Server computer do not
affect other applications on the server. For example, configuring the server to use a
proxy server that is different from the proxy server used by Internet Explorer does
not affect Internet Explorer.
Changing the proxy settings on the Search Server Settings page affects servers
running the index component only. For other servers, you can change the proxy settings
from the Configure Server Farm Account Settings page.
Security Configuration
The Security Configuration section is used to view or configure security settings for
Microsoft SharePoint Products and Technologies for servers in the server farm,
including blocked file types and antivirus configuration if third-party antivirus software
has been installed. Figure 17-4 displays the Security Configuration section,
which is the next area on the SharePoint Portal Server Central Administration page
that you might want to configure before creating your first portal site.
Set SharePoint Administrators Group Account
As mentioned previously, the SharePoint administrators group account is where you
assign a domain user or group as the administrator of the farm.
