Chapter 31: Working with Web Parts 829
Drag the Web Part or a Web Part that displays a list or library that you want to
add to the page from the task pane into a Web Part Page Zone on the Web Part Page.
You can then close the task pane or select more Web Parts. The drag-and-drop operations
for adding Web Parts to a page are available in browsers that support rich user
interaction. You do not need to use the drag-and-drop method of adding a Web Part
to a page; the task pane includes a drop-down list for choosing a Web Part Page
Zone on the page and an Add button for adding the selected Web Part to the
selected zone. (Refer back to Figure 31-2.) Additionally, these alternative controls
together with the keyboard shortcuts make Web Parts accessible to users who do not
use a mouse. For more information on keyboard shortcuts, refer to either the Share-
Point Portal Server 2003 Administrator’s Guide or the Windows SharePoint Services
Administrator’s Guide.
The third method of adding a new Web Part to a Web Part Page is to Import the Web
Part. You can import a Web Part to a page even if the Web Part is not yet included
in a gallery, as long as you can locate the .dwp file for the Web Part; the assembly
for the Web Part is available in the Global Assembly Cache (GAC) or in the bin
directory for the virtual server, and the Web Part is added to the safe control list. The
GAC is a machine-wide code cache, where you place assemblies (.DLL files) that are
shared among several applications.
To add a Web Part by referencing a .dwp file, on the Web Part Page, click Modify
Shared Page (Shared View) or Modify My Page (Personal View), point to Add
