Glossary
Network Management Services (NMS)
The group of network control and reporting functions that establishes, maintains, and
modifies the operations of the Telcon communication network. NMS supports network
administration through persons or programs that maintain the operational capabilities of
the network. NMS commands are the Telcon equivalent of the CMS 1100 communication
system administrator (CSA) commands.
network resiliency
A feature that maintains network integrity when hardware components or connections
between components in the network fail. This is accomplished through one of two
methods. In the first method, alternate paths through a network are established between
two network users. If a component fails (breaking one of the paths) an alternate path is
used. In the second method, redundant hardware components are installed. If a
component fails, a backup component is used.
Nine Thousand Remote (NTR)
A program that controls communication between a Telcon network and any terminal using
NTR batch communication protocol.
Nine Thousand Remote Line Protocol Handler (NTRLPH)
Services the line protocol for remote batch sites using the NTR protocol.
Nine Thousand Remote Virtualizer Protocol Converter (NTRV2R)
Converts the NTR protocol to the RB2 host protocol for remote batch sites using the NTR
protocol.
Open Systems Interconnection (OSI)
An ISO communication standard network protocol. OSITS is one of the program products
from the Open Systems products available for Telcon. Enables the computer systems of
multiple vendors to communicate. OSI is based on standard protocols developed by ISO
and defined in the ISO Reference Model (usually called the OSI model, as opposed to the
TCP/IP model). OSI architecture has seven layers: physical layer (layer 1), data-link layer
(layer 2), network layer (layer 3), transport layer (layer 4), session layer (layer 5),
presentation layer (layer 6), and application layer (layer 7). Each layer has specific
functions, communicates with peer entities (those in the same layer), performs services
for the next higher layer, and requests services from the next lower layer. See also layers.
