Configuring Stratix II & Stratix II GX DevicesFPP Configuration Using a MAX II Device as an External HostFPP configuration using compression and an external host provides thefastest method to configure Stratix II and Stratix II GX devices. In the FPPconfiguration scheme, a MAX II device can be used as an intelligent hostthat controls the transfer of configuration data from a storage device, suchas flash memory, to the target Stratix II or Stratix II GX device.Configuration data can be stored in RBF, HEX, or TTF format. Whenusing the MAX II devices as an intelligent host, a design that controls theconfiguration process, such as fetching the data from flash memory andsending it to the device, must be stored in the MAX II device.1 If you are using the Stratix II or Stratix II GX decompressionand/or design security feature, the external host must be able tosend a DCLK frequency that is 4× the data rate. The 4× DCLK signal does not require an additional pin and is sent on theDCLK pin. The maximum DCLK frequency is 100 MHz, which results in amaximum data rate of 200 Mbps. If you are not using the Stratix II orStratix II GX decompression or design security features, the data rate is8× the DCLK frequency.Figure 7–3 shows the configuration interface connections between theStratix II or Stratix II GX device and a MAX II device for single deviceconfiguration.Figure 7–3. V CC should be high enough to meet the V IHspecification of the I/O on the device and the external host.Altera Corporation 7–15May 2007 Stratix II Device Handbook, Volume 2
