7. Configuring APEX 20KE &APEX 20KC DevicesCF51005-2.2IntroductionAPEX 20KE and APEX 20KC devices can be configured using one offour configuration schemes. All configuration schemes use either amicroprocessor or configuration device. This section covers how to configure APEX 20KE and APEX 20KCDevices, which use a 1.8-V voltage supply for V CCINT . APEX 20K (non-Eand non-C) devices use a 2.5-V voltage supply for the core. If your targetFPGA is an APEX 20K device which uses a 2.5-V V CCINT , refer toConfiguring Mercury, APEX 20K (2.5 V), ACEX 1K and FLEX 10K Devices inthe Configuration Handbook.APEX 20KE and APEX 20KC devices can be configured using the passiveserial (PS), passive parallel synchronous (PPS), passive parallelasynchronous (PPA), and Joint Test Action Group (JTAG) configurationschemes. The configuration scheme used is selected by driving theAPEX 20KE or APEX 20KC device MSEL1 and MSEL0 pins either high orlow as shown in Table 7–1. If your application only requires a singleconfiguration mode, the MSEL pins can be connected to V CC (V CCIO of theI/O bank where the MSEL pin resides) or to ground. If your applicationrequires more than one configuration mode, you can switch the MSELpins after the FPGA is configured successfully. Toggling these pins duringuser-mode does not affect the device operation; however, the MSEL pinsmust be valid before a reconfiguration is initiated.Table 7–1. Ifonly JTAG configuration is used, you should connect the MSEL pins to ground.(2) JTAG-based configuration takes precedence over other configuration schemes, which means MSEL pin settings are ignored.Altera Corporation 7–1August 2005
