13. Configuring Cyclone IIDevicesCII51013-3.1IntroductionCyclone ® II devices use SRAM cells to store configuration data. SinceSRAM memory is volatile, configuration data must be downloaded toCyclone II devices each time the device powers up. You can use the activeserial (AS) configuration scheme, which can operate at a DCLK frequencyup to 40 MHz, to configure Cyclone II devices. You can also use thepassive serial (PS) and Joint Test Action Group (JTAG)-basedconfiguration schemes to configure Cyclone II devices. Additionally,Cyclone II devices can receive a compressed configuration bitstream anddecompress this data on-the-fly, reducing storage requirements andconfiguration time. This chapter explains the Cyclone II configuration features and describeshow to configure Cyclone II devices using the supported configurationschemes. This chapter also includes configuration pin descriptions andthe Cyclone II configuration file format.fFor more information on setting device configuration options or creatingconfiguration files, see the Software Settings chapter in the ConfigurationHandbook.Cyclone IIConfigurationOverviewYou can use the AS, PS, and JTAG configuration schemes to configureCyclone II devices. You can select which configuration scheme to use bydriving the Cyclone II device MSEL pins either high or low as shown inTable 13–1. The MSEL pins are powered by the V CCIO power supply of thebank they reside in. The MSEL[1..0] pins have 9-kΩ internal pull-downresistors that are always active. During power-on reset (POR) andreconfiguration, the MSEL pins have to be at LVTTL V IL or V IH levels to beconsidered a logic low or logic high, respectively. Therefore, to avoid anyproblems with detecting an incorrect configuration scheme, you shouldconnect the MSEL[] pins to the V CCIO of the I/O bank they reside in andGND without any pull-up or pull-down resistors. The MSEL[] pinsshould not be driven by a microprocessor or another device.Altera Corporation 13–1February 2007
