Passive Serial ConfigurationIf you are using a download cable to configure device(s) on a board thatalso has configuration devices, you should electrically isolate theconfiguration device from the target device(s) and cable. One way toisolate the configuration device is to add logic, such as a multiplexer, thatcan select between the configuration device and the cable. Themultiplexer chip should allow bidirectional transfers on the nSTATUSand CONF_DONE signals. Another option is to add switches to the fivecommon signals (nCONFIG, nSTATUS, DCLK, DATA0, and CONF_DONE)between the cable and the configuration device. The last option is toremove the configuration device from the board when configuring theFPGA with the cable. Figure 7–15 shows a combination of a configurationdevice and a download cable to configure an FPGA.7–32 Altera CorporationConfiguration Handbook, Volume 1 August 2005
