Configuring Stratix II & Stratix II GX DevicesIf the configuration bit stream size exceeds the capacity of a serialconfiguration device, you must select a larger configuration deviceand/or enable the compression feature. When configuring multipledevices, the size of the bitstream is the sum of the individual devices’configuration bitstreams.A system may have multiple devices that contain the same configurationdata. In active serial chains, this can be implemented by storing twocopies of the SOF in the serial configuration device. The first copy wouldconfigure the master Stratix II or Stratix II GX device, and the secondcopy would configure all remaining slave devices concurrently. All slavedevices must be the same density and package. The setup is similar toFigure 7–13, where the master is set up in active serial mode and the slavedevices are set up in passive serial mode.To configure four identical Stratix II or Stratix II GX devices with thesame SOF, you could set up the chain similar to the example shown inFigure 7–14. The first device is the master device and its MSEL pins shouldbe set to select AS configuration. The other three slave devices are set upfor concurrent configuration and its MSEL pins should be set to select PSconfiguration. The nCEO pin from the master device drives the nCE inputpins on all three slave devices, and the DATA and DCLK pins connect inparallel to all four devices. During the first configuration cycle, the masterdevice reads its configuration data from the serial configuration devicewhile holding nCEO high. After completing its configuration cycle, themaster drives nCE low and transmits the second copy of the configurationdata to all three slave devices, configuring them simultaneously.Altera Corporation 7–41May 2007 Stratix II Device Handbook, Volume 2
