The nINIT_CONF pin does not need to be connected if its functionality is not used. If nINIT_CONF is not usedor not available (e.g., on EPC1 devices), nCONFIG must be pulled to V CC either directly or through a resistor.(3) The enhanced configuration devices’ and EPC2 devices’ OE and nCS pins have internal programmable pull-upresistors. If internal pull-up resistors are used, external pull-up resistors should not be used on these pins. Theinternal pull-up resistors are used by default in the Quartus II software. To turn off the internal pull-up resistors, check the Disable nCS and OE pull-ups on configuration device option when generating programming files. When using enhanced configuration devices or EPC2 devices, nCONFIGof the FPGA can be connected to nINIT_CONF, which allows theINIT_CONF JTAG instruction to initiate FPGA configuration. ThenINIT_CONF pin does not need to be connected if its functionality is notused. If nINIT_CONF is not used or not available (e.g., on EPC1 devices),nCONFIG must be pulled to V CC either directly or through a resistor. Aninternal pull-up resistor on the nINIT_CONF pin is always active in theenhanced configuration devices and the EPC2 devices, which means anexternal pull-up is not required if nCONFIG is tied to nINIT_CONF. Ifmultiple EPC2 devices are used to configure an APEX II device(s), onlythe first EPC2 has its nINIT_CONF pin tied to the device’s nCONFIG pin.You can use a single configuration chain to configure APEX II deviceswith other Altera devices. To ensure that all devices in the chain completeconfiguration at the same time or that an error flagged by one deviceinitiates reconfiguration in all devices, all of the device CONF_DONE andnSTATUS pins must be tied together.6–16 Altera CorporationConfiguration Handbook, Volume 1 August 2005
