Configuring Cyclone II DevicesAltera programming hardware (APU) or other third-party programminghardware can be used to program blank serial configuration devicesbefore they are mounted onto PCBs. Alternatively, you can use an onboardmicroprocessor to program the serial configuration device on thePCB using C-based software drivers provided by Altera (i.e., the SRunnersoftware driver).A serial configuration device can be programmed in-system by anexternal microprocessor using SRunner. SRunner is a software driverdeveloped for embedded serial configuration device programming, which can be easily customized to fit in different embedded systems.SRunner can read a Raw Programming Data File (.rpd) and write to theserial configuration devices. The serial configuration deviceprogramming time using SRunner is comparable to the programmingtime when using the Quartus II Programmer.fFor more information about SRunner, see the SRunner: An EmbeddedSolution for EPCS Programming White Paper and the source code on theAltera web site at www.altera.com. For more information onprogramming serial configuration devices, see the Serial ConfigurationDevices Data Sheet in the Configuration Handbook.Figure 13–8 shows the timing waveform for the AS configuration schemeusing a serial configuration device.Figure 13–8.
