Debug10.1 About debugThis section gives an overview of debug and describes the debug components. The processorforms one component of a debug system. Figure 10-1 shows a typical system.DebughostDebug host computer running suitable debugger toolProtocolconverterfor example, DSTREAM or RealView ICEDebugtargetDevelopment system containing ARM processorFigure 10-1 Typical debug systemThis typical system has several parts:• Debug host.• Protocol converter.• Debug target.• The debug unit.10.1.1 Debug hostThe debug host is a computer, for example a personal computer, running a software debuggersuch as RealView Debugger. The debug host enables you to issue high-level commands such assetting breakpoint at a certain location, or examining the contents of a memory address.10.1.2 Protocol converterThe debug host sends messages to the debug target using an interface such as Ethernet. However, the debug target typically implements a different interface protocol. A device such asRealView ICE is required to convert between the two protocols.10.1.3 Debug targetThe debug target is the lowest level of the system. An example of a debug target is adevelopment system with a test chip or a silicon part with a processor. The debug target implements system support for the protocol converter to access the debug unitusing the Advanced Peripheral Bus (APB) slave interface.10.1.4 The debug unitThe processor debug unit assists in debugging software running on the processor. You can usethe processor debug unit, in combination with a software debugger program, to debug:• Application software.ARM DDI 0438I Copyright © 2011-2013 ARM.
