This course is to focus on one of the most persistent questions of the drama of the Elizabethan
age: the theatricality of the stage. The major plays by Christopher Marlowe and Ben Jonson
will be read. Students are expected to be familiar with Marlowe's Faustus at the very beginning
of the term.

English Renaissance poetry was shaped by what originally was written in Italy and taken over
by French writers. Boccaccio, Petrark, Dante and others produced the models for the rebirth of
English poetry. The major English poets under discussion will be Wyatt, Spenser and
Shakespeare.
