On closer inspection, phenomena of ancient religions are much less static than frequently
assumed. This seminar will deal with processes of changes that have come into the focus of
current research. It is open to graduate as well as post-graduate students and will combine the
seminar-style discussion of significant material with the colloquium-style presentation and
discussion of research design of projects of participants and external speakers.

The tragedies written by Aischylos, Sophokles and Euripides are undoubtly an invaluable and at
the same time ambivalent source for the study of ancient Greek and especially Athenian
religion. We are dealing with theatrical pieces that were conceived for and performed within a
very specific religious context: the festival of the Dionysia. They offer us informations
concerning religious beliefs and sometimes detailed descriptions of rituals. From another,
perhaps more allusive point of view they allow an insight in ancient ways of anticipating the
divine, the dynamic transformations and the transformation mechanisms of this understanding
during the 5th cent BCE. The ambivalence of the tragedies as sources for the study of Greek
religion becomes, though, apparent as soon as we identify the literary media for the
construction of the divine: well known myths and rituals are often presented in an "enriched"
form and literature can create a new religious "reality". Based on a selection of passages in
translation this seminar will examine the value of Greek tragedy as a source in the study of
Greek religion.
