From a postcolonial and cultural studies perspective we will examine
four popular narratives of the Robinsonade and children's
(adolescence's) classics. This class will look at Daniel Defoe's
/Robinson Crusoe/ (1719), R.M. Ballantyne's /The Coral Island/ (1858),
William Golding's /The Lord Of The Flies/ (1954) and Ian McEwan's /The
Cement Garden/ (1978) and the changing concepts and perception of
primitivism and civilization, at the motifs of the island and of lost
youth and at images of adolescence. You are expected to have read the
novels before the beginning of the term.
