This seminar introduces students to the linguistic subdiscipline pragmatics, which studies
language as used by society/culture. Starting out with a survey of the basic issues in
pragmatics, this seminar focuses on the following topics: implicature and reference, pragmatic
principles, speech acts, conversation analysis, pragmatic acts as well as on social and cultural
aspects of pragmatics.
Throughout this course, students will be given the opportunity to apply and test their
knowledge by tackling topic- and/or session-specific problem sets.

This seminar focuses on the so-called left periphery of the clause, which can be seen as the
interface between structure and discourse. Starting out with the fundamental distinction
between topic and focus, and thus the vital differences between topic-comment structures and
focus-presupposition structures, this seminar probes into the semantic and pragmatic factors
that shape the structure of the left periphery. Emphasis will be placed on the interplay between
the syntactic and discourse-related properties of both the positions in the left periphery and the
various kinds of elements that are 'preposed' to the left periphery.
