A text cannot be professionally translated purely by using the right software and a good
dictionary. This course addresses the difficulties specific to German-English translation with
particular emphasis on acquiring familiarity with the subject of a particular text and/or its
cultural background. The aim is to develop the research skills of the students using selected
specialist texts, for example of literary, economic or journalistic origin. Students will be
expected to participate by preparing vocabulary lists and carrying out background research,
discussing texts in class and preparing written translations. Testing will consist of one graded
piece of coursework and a written examination at the end of the course.

This integrated skills-course covers units 1-7 of the textbook Landmark Advanced and
familiarizes the students with exam techniques which are required for the English B2 exam. It
relies heavily on class participation and motivated self-study.Students need to have passed the
Quick Placement test successfully and scored 60 points or more in the C-Test to be able to
register.
