In this course we read a selection of classic texts in the history of sociology. The goal is to
understand the texts in the context of key debates in sociological theory and to apply them to
contemporary empirical problems. The central texts are Marx and Engels' ‘Das kommunistische
Manifest’, Durkheim ‘De la division du travail social’, Weber ‘Die protestantische Ethik’, and
extracts from the classic works of Parsons, Mead, Elias, Goffman, Adorno and Horkheimer,
Giddens, Bourdieu, and Habermas.
