whose own life experience had readied him for this approach. After Dr. Peete"s retirement,
Dr. Gunn practiced for almost 20 more years by himself, the last nine years in a small office
in the family home and most of this latter time with the handicap of heart disease. He felt
that his patients represented the children he never had, and that his mission was to nurture
and care for them. In June 1948, at the height of the Berlin Wall crisis, Dr. Gunn joined the
Missouri National Guard in Kansas City. He served as a commander of several medical units
of the 205th Medical Battalion, rising to the rank of Colonel in charge of headquarters, and
retired in 1981 after 32 years. He was a lover of opera and dedicated to such causes as mental
health, animal welfare, higher education, conservation, philanthropy, both locally and
worldwide, and establishing the true identity of the author of Shakespeare"s works. He
established a lectureship in honor of Dr. Peete at Trinity Lutheran Hospital, recently
transferred to the K.U. Medical Center, featuring mind/body medicine, and another at the
K.U. Medical Center in the history and philosophy of medicine department honoring Dr.
Peete and his wife Alice for their contributions to the School of Medicine. Dr. Gunn made a
substantial donation to the Center for the Study of Science Fiction established by his brother,
James E. Gunn, science-fiction author and retired K.U. professor of English, and named for
their parents, and has funded a lectureship in the English Department through a bequest.
Dr. Gunn was a longtime resident of the Northeast Presbyterian Church and served several
terms as a church official. He is survived by his brother, James and sister-in-law, Jane Gunn
of Lawrence, KS, two nephews, Christopher and Kevin Gunn, and their respective wives,
Diana and Karen, and a stepgreat-niece, Erin Fowler. Published in the Kansas City Star on
